Big Birding Day 2011

BBD is an annual festival promoting birding in Uganda. It consists of 3 events: the launch at the Uganda Museum with speakers from Ministry of Tourism, Nature Uganda, Uganda Tourism Board and USAID – STAR followed the next day by the main event, the bird counts throughout the country and finally, a day of fun and celebration where the results of the counts are announced.

Venture Uganda staff again participated in BBD and, this year, had a fantastic day birding from small boats in the Mabamba swamp, meandering through the channels of the swamp and out into the more open water towards Lake Victoria.

Our group counted over 100 species including the much sought after Shoebill. Other species included: Winding Cisticola, Cattle Egret, Woodland Kingfisher, Great Blue Turaco, Jacana, Lizard Buzzard, Whinchat, Fan-tailed Widowbird, Black-headed Heron, African Marsh Harrier, Red-eyed Dove, Hamerkop, Wahlberg’s Eagle, Stout Cisticola, Common Drongo, Red-headed Lovebird, Black Kite, Ibis Hadada, Papyrus Gonolek, Helmeted Guineafowl, Flappet Lark, Grassland Pipit, Yellow-throated Tinkerbird, Common  Waxbill, Ruppell’s Weaverbird

More details about the festival and the results of the counts will be published on the Nature Uganda website.
