Mahogany Springs: a new lodge in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Mahogany Springs is a fantastic new lodge nestling in the Buhoma hills, one of the starting points for gorilla tracking in Bwindi. The lodge sits almost unnoticed on the lower slopes of the hillside and overlooks the Munyanga River. The lodge owners are supporting a community project to generate power from this river in the near future.

Mahogany Springs consists of 6 beautifully finished private bandas as well as a stunning 2 bedroom Presidential suite, and a main lodge housing bar, restaurant and lounge areas with spectacular views across the river to the tea and matooke gardens of the local villagers and the edge of the forest. The kitchen, run by top Indian chef Subedi has its own kitchen garden with many vegetables, fruit and herbs grown organically on site.

The lodge is a superb base not only for gorilla tracking but also for birding (Bwindi is one of the top birding sites in Uganda) and there are many enjoyable local walks and community activities. What really makes Mahogany Springs special though is the superb service and attention to detail – on chilly nights you even get a hot water bottle! In fact, things are so good the gorillas have even been known to wander out of the forest and into the gardens for a few nights free accommodation! Luckily, for those who have to pay, Mahogany Springs represents excellent value for money.

Nature Uganda member’s walk

Nature Uganda – the Birdlife International partner in Uganda – regularly organises members’ nature walks and last month we had a chance to visit the Entebbe Reptile Centre.

The Centre is a fairly new project, set up by Ugandan herpatologists to provide education about reptiles, to include them in the many wildlife attractions Uganda has to offer and to rescue those under threat from local people. The Centre is still quite small but leads on to the swamps around the shores of Lake Victoria where you can enjoy a walk and maybe spot a few water birds as well.

The Nature Uganda gang is a friendly, relaxed group of enthusiasts who regularly come together to enjoy a nature walk and learn more about a particular conservation project or activity. Many also bring their children – the future stewards of the environment.
