See the southern white rhinos at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch

Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch is a conservation success story. Where rhinos had been previously wiped out from Uganda, thanks to the efforts of the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rhino Fund Uganda, it is now possible to see these magnificent creatures in the wild.

It is through the dedication and hard work of the conservation team, that the rhinos are flourishing.

Since its beginnings in 2005, the reintroduction project has seen wild rhino numbers rise, and the sanctuary is becoming increasingly popular with tourists keen to discover more about the conservation work undertaken by the team.

Rhino trekking

Ziwa is around two-and-a-half to three hours from Kampala and is an enjoyable stop-off for visitors en-route to Murchison Falls.

Alternatively, it can make an interesting day trip in itself. Guests can enjoy lunch before being briefed on what to expect and exploring the area on foot where the rhinos live.

Expert guides and rangers are always on hand to make sure visitors of all levels of fitness can get the most out of the rhino trekking experience.

For those who wish to stay for a little longer, there is also a choice of accommodation which the Venture Uganda team can arrange on behalf of guests. Meanwhile, night walks are another opportunity to see adult and baby rhinos in their natural habitat.

What else is there to see?

Other activities to be enjoyed include:

  • Nature walks
  • Night walks
  • Birdwatching

As well as rhinos, other wildlife species to be found here are bush bucks, warthogs and Uganda kobs.
