13 Oct Discover Buganda’s beauty and heritage at Ssezibwa Falls
Just over an hour’s drive from the capital, and located along the main Kampala to Jinja highway, Ssezibwa Falls is a perfect escape if you’re seeking some peace and tranquillity.
It is one of the jewels of Buganda, located in the central region of Uganda.
The magical falls, which are found on the River Sezibwa and stand at around 7 metres (23 feet) high, are certainly impressive. With the sound of rushing water and plenty of birdlife to see, it’s no wonder that this is a favourite resting place for travellers on the way to enjoy the more adrenaline-fuelled activities available at Jinja.
It would be a mistake, however, to see Ssezibwa Falls as offering anything less of an adventure. Indeed, with the amazing rock formations that adorn the site, it is no surprise that it is popular with visitors.
For those who enjoy walking, the area around the falls is ideal for peaceful strolls while watching out for primates and the host of bird species who dwell here. Wildlife such as bush monkeys and red-tailed monkeys can be observed in the surrounding forest.
The legend of Ssezibwa Falls
According to legend, the Sezibwa and Bwanda rivers were twins. While the Bwanda flowed to its mother’s village, the Sezibwa made its own way through the land, overcoming many obstacles along the way.
To this day, the faithful flock here for healing, help with problems and to seek favours from the spirits believed to live in this sacred place.
What else is there to do?
