What to pack when travelling to Uganda

Safaris and Holidays in Uganda

  • Trainers/walking boots for hiking & tracking (there will be mud/dust and it can be slippery in the jungle)
  • Long trousers for gorilla & chimp tracking and forest walks (consider a long-sleeved shirt too)
  • Socks to tuck trousers into to stop ants getting into your pants
  • Sweater/fleece for cooler evenings and early mornings
  • Rain jacket
  • Hat
  • Sun screen
  • Insect repellent
  • Sarong/wrap (multiple uses e.g. covering yourself when pulling trousers down for bush toilet, keeping dust off on long journeys, covering up in strong sunshine, wiping sweat off…)
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Swim wear


University field courses

  • Reasonably smart clothes for official meetings/visits (suits are not necessary but no shorts & flip flops please!).
  • Avoid inappropriate clothing for refugee camp/post-conflict areas e.g. combat/ military/ camouflage trousers
  • Don’t bring too much luggage. You will have to sit with it (as bags are loaded on the back seats of the bus), so you will be more comfortable the less you bring. Laundry can be done cheaply in hotels.


Items to AVOID wearing in Uganda

  • Clothes exposing the midriff
  • ‘Short’ shorts (knee-length is ok).
  • Knickers showing above clothing


Food to bring, if desired

  • Cereal/energy bars and other snacks
  • Non-melting sweets e.g. boiled sweets


Don’t forget your …

  • Camera
  • (head) torch
  • Phone/watch with alarm clock
  • Battery chargers/spare batteries (the power supply may be erratic)
  • Anti-malarials
  • Prescription medicines from home (you may not be able to buy the same brands in Uganda)
  • Cases to protect items like cameras, contacts lenses from dust
  • Keep a copy of your passport somewhere other than in your passport!
  • UK re-entry visa, in applicable
  • Day pack/small bag for day excursions
  • Padlock to secure your suitcase/rucksack while you are out of the hotel. Not all hotels have safes.
