Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park

This park takes its name from the Virunga volcanoes which sit on the border between Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo.

This beautiful region boasts montane, evergreen, bamboo and swamp habitats, making it home to a wide range of species, including mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and many birds.

Track gorillas through the rainforest, with an expert guide, and spend an hour watching these awesome giants in their natural habitat or do a longer habituation experience.
Tourism has been a major support to gorilla conservation and is arranged in such a way that most people can manage the hike. Permits are limited, so 6-month advance booking is recommended, if possible.

Additional activities include a visit to Dian Fossy’s tomb, the Ellen Degeneres campus of the Gorilla Fund and the annual gorilla naming ceremony.

Nyungwe National Park

Nature Walks at Nyungwe National Park

A nature walk in this ancient rainforest brings the kind of peace and restoration that only complete immersion in nature brings.

Go at your own pace, learning from your expert guide about the flora and fauna within the forest and, for really special views, experience the 70m high canopy walk. You can also track chimpanzees and other primates.

The park is also well-known for its amazing birding with over 310 species, including Albertine Rift endemics.

Animals in Akagera National Park

Animals in Akagera National Park

Akagera lies in the flatter, warmer, eastern side of Rwanda, an area incorporating vast wetlands too.

There is a choice of accommodation enabling you to spend time in the park viewing animals on game drives and during a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Expect to see lions, rhinos, hippos, buffaloes, giraffes, various antelope, zebra, elephants and more, as well as a rich array of bird life.

Akagera is a great conservation success story as it was restored from a cattle-grazing wasteland in 2010 and has significantly improved the lives of the local communities with schemes like revenue sharing and fish farming.

Lake Kivu

Lots To Do at Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu in western Rwanda is a beautiful lake, dotted with little islands and sandy beaches, offering amazing opportunities for fun and relaxation.

Try gently paddleboarding in the clear waters or kayaking along the shores to see birds and monkeys in the treetops. Hike up into the hills for fabulous views over the lake or cycle the 5-day Congo Nile Trail along the lakeside and through local villages. Shorter trails are also available!

Ethnographic Museum, Huye

Ethnographic Museum, Huye

This fascinating museum takes you on a journey through Rwandan culture and history.

Learn how people dressed, the household items they used, how they constructed dwellings, the tools they used for agriculture, their medicinal practices, and the weapons they fought with.

Just about every aspect of life is covered and it is all brought-to-life by a knowledgeable local guide. The museum is housed in a wonderful building, located in beautiful, mature gardens (time for a little more birding!)

City Break in Kigali

Discover all the activities you would expect on a city break: restaurants and bars, wonderful shops and bustling markets, and plenty of relaxation and entertainment. A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial (which explains all about the events of 1994) is a must.
